* ATTENTION FORMER BREWBE USERS: *
* ------------------------------ *
* To switch to the new version of BrewBe do the following: *
* Startup your old version, tag the recipes you want to keep and *
* export them. Hang on to that export file but delete all the *
* other program files (or just unzip the new version right over *
* the old one). Once your new version is installed, you can import *
* your saved recipes. *

First the legal stuff: BrewBe was written as BEERWARE. If you like it
and use it then you owe me (at least) one of your brews. Please send it
to:

Please feel free to distribute BrewBe to your friends, brewmates and
whoever else you think might be interested. Be sure to distribute all files
or the product will not work properly.
BrewBe is easy enough to use that it really doesn't require a full
instructions manual. I just want to tell you what it can do to make you
aware of all of its features and how to make the best use of its help
system. BrewBe's main features include:
- Formulation of new recipes and batch logging.
- Automatic computations for OG, Extraction Rate, Alcohol Content,
Color and IBUs.
- Comparison of a particular recipe to a designated beer style.
- Computation of water volumes and temperatures for infusion mashing.
- Recipe Import/Export so that recipes can be shared among BrewBe
users.
BrewBe's help facility is fairly context sensitive. Pressing F1 at any
point in the program will give you at least some information about the
particular function you are using at the time. If you press F1 again while
you are already in the Help facility, you can edit the Help screen that you
are viewing. This is a handy way of being able to remind yourself about
how things work. Just remember to please provide the original help files
to anyone you share your copy of BrewBe with.
When you startup BrewBe you are presented with a list of recipes in the
database. There are lots of things you can do at this point:
- You can remain on the main screen and print, copy, delete and tag
recipes.
- You can press Enter to edit an existing recipe or Alt-A to add a new
recipe in which case you will go to a new screen designed for editing and
defining recipe ingredients and procedures.
- You can press the MashCalc key and enter the mashing calculator. This
assists infusion mashers in computing correct water temps and volumes.
- You can press the Other Options key and go to the Other Options menu.
This is where you can change your printer definition, import new recipes
or export tagged recipes and compress the database files for increased
performance (something you might need to do once in a great while).
One other thing I'd like to mention is the use of the F2 key. Just about
everything you are prompted for in the program can either be entered
manually or chosen from a list. To see a list of valid choices at any
particular prompt, press the F2 key and if a list is available for that
prompt it will popup on the screen. If you want to make a choice that is
not in the list that's okay too. You can enter the choice manually *or*
you can add the choice to the popup list selections. Just look at the
bottom of the list box for info on how to add new items to the list. The
one list you can't add items to off the cuff is the Recipe Styles list. To
edit or add styles you must go to the Other Options menu.
That's about it as far as a road map to the program goes. One other thing
that needs mentioning: BrewBe will *not* work if it is executed from a
directory other than the one in which it has been installed. So if you are
using Windows or some other menuing program to execute BrewBe,
remember to specify the correct startup directory. If you are starting
BrewBe from the DOS prompt and want to be able to just type in
"BREWBE" from anywhere you are, create a .bat file that first changes
directories to the BrewBe directory and then executes the program (as
opposed to just adding the BrewBe directory to your path).
Please notify me of any bugs you find in the program. I'd also like to
hear any suggestions you think of that would make BrewBe either easier
to use or more useful as a brewers assistant.
